Trump Wants an 'All-American' Supreme Court Candidate With a 'Central Casting Image'

Politics

In what should surprise no one, Trump is reportedly picking his next Supreme Court Justice candidate not based on qualifications, opinions, or a candidate’s body of work. Rather, he’s looking at, according to Politico, “a potential nominee’s appearance as well as the look and feel of his or her family.”

Trump, who is expected to announce his candidate on Monday, is apparently looking for someone who is “all-American,” according to one insider—a highly loaded euphemism that reads as code for a white Christian family.

Another source really spelled it out: “Beyond the qualifications, what really matters is, does this nominee fit a central casting image for a Supreme Court nominee, as well as his or her spouse.” Trump does not care much whether they support Roe v. Wade or not.

Trump is reportedly favoring conservative federal appeals judge Brett Kavanaugh, who has voted against pro-choice interests. But some conservatives argue he isn’t conservative enough. He is also reportedly considering federal appellate judge Amy Coney Barrett, who may put her Catholic faith ahead of her duty as a judge. Regardless, I have no reason to assume that our nightmare president will choose anything short of a nightmare Supreme Court nominee.
