Barf BagWelcome to Barf Bag, a daily politics roundup to help you sort through the chaotic Trumpian news cycle.

Here’s all the shit we couldn’t cover today:

  • The Intercept published a full transcript of the “very friendly” April phone between Donald Trump and his strongman crush Rodrigo Duterte, in which he congratulated Duterte for doing an “unbelievable job on the drug problem” in the Philippines. Duterte, who has overseen thousands of extrajudicial killings of alleged drug dealers/users over the past year, was recently invited to the White House. Trump also bragged to Duterte that the U.S. has two nuclear submarines in Korean waters. [The Intercept, New York Times, Reuters]
  • Former FBI director Comey’s handling of the Clinton email investigation last summer was based on a Russian document that may have been fake. [Washington Post]
  • Intelligence collected last summer found that senior Russian officials had discussed how to influence members of the Trump campaign, specifically Paul Manafort and Michael Flynn. [New York Times]
  • Ben Carson called poverty a “state of mind” in an interview. “You take somebody that has the right mindset, you can take everything from them and put them on the street, and I guarantee in a little while they’ll be right back up there,” he said. This is categorically false, although it’s certainly true that Ben Carson is an expert in very confused states of mind. [Washington Post]
  • Sean Spicer, an astonishingly tragic figure plucked straight from the fossilized brain of William Shakespeare, did not get invited to meet the Pope. [CNN]
  • Democrats are coalescing behind a $15 minimum wage. [Politico]
  • Montana’s special election is tomorrow. [Politico]
  • OF COURSE Paul Ryan is a Stifler fan. [Twitter]

Here are some tweets the president was allowed to publish:

UK Update:

So on the second day after the bombing campaigning has finally been agreed to be stopped for a little longer, restarting on Friday (https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2017/may/24/uk-political-parties-campaigning-manchester-attack).

In regards to the bombing itself the deployment of troops around London has begun, with troops taking up guard duty outside key facilities such as Westminster and Downing Street. Despite the claims that this was to allow Armed Police to focus on the investigation into the bombing photos of raids in Manchester suggest that raids are also being carried out by what appears to be the Special Air Service given the colour of the sanitised (devoid of insignia) equipment, casual clothing, concealing facegear, and tattoos (tattoos are still heavily regulated in the Police), thereby showing that the threat is worse than the government want to admit.

(Top: Likely SAS members along with Armed Police. Below: Counter Terrorist Specialist Firearms Officers during the Westminster attack in March for comparison)

This seems to be backed up over the day as multiple people have already been arrested, largely members of the bomber’s family of which many seem to be connected with questionable groups in Libya. The total arrested now stands at 9, seven in the UK with two arrested by Libyan authorities over there. One of the arrests, in Wigan, occurred after a man with a suspicious package was stopped by police (it’s still unknown what the package was) (see tweet below, http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-40037469/arrest-in-wigan-after-manchester-attack). The Police have also admitted that they believe the bombmaker to still be at large and that there may be other cells active in the UK at this time, making the hunt increasingly desperate (http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/manchester-arena-bomb-maker-search-13086027).

It’s also emerged that the bomber had previously been raised as a possible concern to the police but this had failed to be followed up on in the months following (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/05/24/security-services-missed-five-opportunities-stop-manchester).

Despite the promises from your cunt of a President about sticking together at this time the Special Relationship, already strained, is now on the verge of collapse as the US Government has spent the last 48 hours leaking increasing amounts of operational details to your Press regarding the attack and the bomber. This hit a peak this afternoon when they leaked pictures of bomb components recovered at the scene to the New York Times (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-40038630). This is on the back of you deciding to burn the Israelis only a couple of weeks ago when they fed intel to the Russians. Both the government and police are now openly questioning whether we should share anything with the US at all (https://news.npcc.police.uk/releases/manchester-incident-update, this is probably closest you’ll get to an official statement in the UK telling you to go fuck yourself).

On the more uplifting side of the situation the UK at large continues life as normal. Today it was announced that the British Red Cross appeal had raised £2 million for the victims already (see below) and people had largely been mocking the increased security via the #BritishThreatLevels hashtag online (https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2017/may/24/britishthreatlevels-hashtag-british-character-social-media-terror-british-threat-levels).
