Though Sen. John McCain sorta joked with reporters that he’d vote for the confirmation of former Exxon Mobil CEO Rex Tillerson as Secretary of State “when pigs fly,” he and other opposing Republicans Lindsey Graham and Marco Rubio have meekly capitulated. Please welcome Tillerson, current bud of Vladimir Putin, as the face of American diplomacy!
Fuck John McCain. Here’s a guy who constantly positioned him as the adult in the room (albeit the unpredictable one) who could always be counted on to rise above partisan politics, to the point that he seriously considered tapping a Democrat as his VP.
Instead, he cravenly picked a completely unqualified woman, giving her legitimacy and launching her political career, making her the darling of the tea party that would seek to undermine Obama’s legitimacy and made this era so unnecessarily partisan. He bears a not insignificant portion of the blame for fostering the political environment that made someone like Trump palatable.
And despite his constantly performative expression of misgivings about Trump, he has caved every step of the way in supporting him. When the rubber hit the road, and he could have cemented his status as a principled man, he caved, again and again, to partisanship.
And it wasn’t just his lack of principles, it was his lack of personal honor. Donald Trump is a draft dodger who mocked McCain for being a prisoner of war, and still McCain won’t actually resist.
