Rashida Tlaib Just Made History

NewsPolitics

On Tuesday night, Rashida Tlaib made history by winning her congressional race. She will be the first Muslim American women in Congress, a distinction she is likely to share with Minnesota Democrat, Ilhan Omar.

In Michigan’s 13th Congressional District, Tlaib, a former state representative, won the general election after she came out on top in the crowded Democratic primary in August. Tlaib is stepping into the former seat of John Conyers, who stepped down last December amidst several allegations of sexual misconduct.

Tlaib ran—and won—on a staunchly progressive platform and supports raising the minimum wage and Medicare for All. “It was people that were tired of the same old politics and tired of the same kind of people getting elected over and over again,” Tlaib told Jezebel in an interview earlier this year.

This is a developing story.
