Parkland Survivors Might Be the Next Crop of Congressional Interns

House Democrats are inviting Parkland survivors to intern for them over the summer and help work on policy related to gun violence prevention. (They should pay their new interns, by the way.)

Representatives Joe Crowley of New York, Ted Deutch of Florida, and Linda Sanchez and Mike Thompson of California penned a letter to their Democratic colleagues on the Hill, encouraging them to “open their offices” to the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students, who have proved, again and again, that they’re way better at mobilizing people than grown ass elected officials.

“We think it would be a great experience for them to be on the Hill to see exactly how things operate — or doesn’t, to some degree — but also to have time with these very special young people that have experienced something that none of us ever want to have experienced and I think we can learn from each other,” House Democratic Caucus Chairman Joe Crowley, who is helping lead the effort, told NBC News. “I would be thrilled if a significant number of them came up here and spent the summer helping to learn the system better so they will be even more effective advocates going forward,” Rep Deutch, who represents the district the high school is located in, told NBC News. […]

Crowley also told NBC News that the students will get a chance to interact with people who disagree with them and “learn from the experience.” This might have been a throwaway comment, but it’s worth mentioning here that Parkland teens have already done that. They’ve had ghouls call them crisis actors, been bullied by a red-faced, herbal supplement shilling goon, and have even faced off against National Rifle Association spokeswoman Dana Loesch and Republican Senator Marco Rubio. So they’ve uh….. certainly faced a lot of people who disagree with them already!

Still, this is a great opportunity. Which means the gesture should be extended to all the young activists from communities plagued with gun violence who are just as deserving.
