Surprising no one except your MAGA hat-wearing uncle, most Americans don’t think Trump is particularly woke on the race front. According to a new poll by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, 57 percent of adults—“8 in 10 blacks, three-quarters of Hispanics and nearly half of whites”—believe Trump is a racist. Additionally, 57 percent of Americans believe Trump’s policies are bad for Muslims, and 56 percent believe they’re bad for “Hispanics.”
Black Americans have the most pessimistic outlook, with nine in ten disapproving of his presidency thus far. Nine in ten black Americans also think that the country is headed in the wrong direction, with three quarters believing conditions have actually worsened since Trump’s election.
Michael Jefferies, an American Studies professor at Wellesley College, told the AP what we already know—that none of this shit is surprising:
Jefferies said African-Americans are suspicious primarily because Trump has few domestic policy milestones so far in his young presidency. His administration has stated goals of cutting housing programs and gutting the Affordable Health Care Act, both of which work to address inequality.
Jefferies said Trump’s slow reaction to the unrest in Charlottesville, Virginia over Confederate monuments and his comments about immigrants and people of color also probably played a role in how African-Americans see him.
This, on top of Trump actively avoiding renting apartments to black people in the ’70s, calling for the execution of five black and Latino teenagers for a the rape of a white woman in the ‘90s and still believing to this day that they did it despite DNA evidence to the contrary, peddling the lie that Obama wasn’t actually born in America, believing that black people live in inner city hellholes, and more, black Americans negative opinions of Trump will likely see little change.
The only demographic that doesn’t hate Trump’s guts right now are white folks, 45 percent of whom think Trump is doing a great job.
Though Trump has yet to respond to these findings, it’s safe to say that he maintains that he is “the least racist person.”
