Gary Johnson, Responding to a Question about Aleppo: "And What Is Aleppo?"

Screen grab: MSNBC

As spectacular a display of willful ignorance and bluster as Donald Trump put on at the so-called Commander-in-Chief policy forum in New York City last night, Libertarian candidate for president and former governor Gary Johnson has somehow, in the span of about 10 seconds, stolen the crown of leading bullshit artist right off of the Republican nominee’s head.

Asked during an appearance on MSNBC’s Morning Joe what he would do about Aleppo if elected president, Johnson answered that question with another question: “And what is Aleppo?”

“You’re kidding,” commentator Mike Barnicle deadpanned. “No!” a bemused Johnson replied.

“Aleppo is in Syria,” Barnicle explained. “It’s the epicenter of the refugee crisis.”

Oh. That Aleppo.

I don’t think it was bullshit so much as clueless. Bullshit is blathering on in hopes of convincing someone you know what you’re talking about. Trump would have bullshitted his way through that if he didn’t know.

“Well, Aleppo is very important, very vital and we should take a closer look at it. There are things we can do concerning Aleppo and things we shouldn’t do. As president, I would assemble the best people, the best most informed people and we’d sit down and do what’s right with Aleppo. Trust me, under my administration, we’d make sure Aleppo is behind bars where he belongs...”

“It’s a city.”

“Exactly, we would surround the city with bars until we determine who is responsible for Aleppo and put him in a detention camp. Sad.”
