President Donald Trump has cancelled his summit with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un with a letter that is, without exaggeration, one of the weirdest things I’ve ever read in my 28 years on earth.

In the unfortunate slice of history you are seeing above, the Trump White House uses a bizarre mixture of loving, almost sensual regret, the threat of global nuclear catastrophe, and grammatical errors to publicly convey to his North Korean counterpart that the meeting is off. The administration was evidently angered by statements made about Mike Pence by a representative of the North Korean regime, who called the vice president “a political dummy.”

“You talk about your nuclear capabilities, but ours are so massive and powerful that I pray to God they will never have to be used,” Trump wrote.

Then, conversely: “I felt a wonderful dialogue was building up between you and me, and ultimately, it is only that dialogue that matters. Some day, I look very much forward to meeting you.”
