Two Senators Call for Trump's Resignation Over Sexual Misconduct Allegations

Two Democratic senators called for Trump’s resignation over the weekend on account of the many women—19, to be exact—who have publicly accused him of sexual misconduct.

Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey and Senator Jeff Merkley of Oregon each suggested that in an era strewn with the ruined careers of once powerful men due to sexual impropriety, it seems only right that Trump follow suit. Wishful thinking, sure, but you can’t destroy the world’s supply of rancid Cheez Whiz in a day, as they say. As Booker told VICE News:

“I just watched Sen. Al Franken do the honorable thing and resign from his office. My question is, why isn’t Donald Trump doing the same thing — who has more serious allegations against him, with more women who have come forward. The fact pattern on him is far more damning than the fact pattern on Al Franken.”

Merkley echoed Booker’s sentiments in a fundraising email. From CNN:

“I want to be absolutely clear. Donald Trump should resign the presidency.

“At least 17 women have accused Donald Trump of horrific sexual misconduct, and I believe them. Moreover, he’s bragged on tape about that behavior. This is not about politics. This is not about policy. I disagree with him on many things, but this is not about that.”

Trump, who true to form has spent the weekend making the most of Twitter’s newly expanded character limit, is unlikely to do anything on the basis of “honor.” Still, three of Trump’s accusers—Jessica Leeds, Samantha Holvey and Rachel Crooks—will be interviewed by Megyn Kelly on Monday, in addition to appearing at a press conference hosted by Brave New Films at 10:30 EST.

According to a release for the conference, the women “will unite for the first time to speak out about their experiences,” and “call for accountability and an investigation by Congress of sexual misconduct by the President.”

Last week, a Quinnipiac University poll found that 70 percent of Americans think Congress should investigate the allegations of sexual misconduct against Trump. Meanwhile, a judge is expected to determine by the end of the year whether a lawsuit filed by one accuser, Summer Zervos, can move forward.
